Created by the Denison Dam on the Red River, this lake spans over 89,000 acres, making it one of the largest reservoirs in the United States.

The lake’s rich biodiversity, coupled with its role as a vital water source, adds to its ecological significance.

Lake Texoma from the Texas side shoreline

Lake Texoma was formed when the Denison Dam dam was authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1938 and was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The building of the dam began in 1939 and was completed in 1944.

While the primary purpose of the dam was flood control, it also served to generate hydroelectric power and provide a reliable water supply for the region. Lake Texoma officially impounded with the completion of the Denison Dam in 1944, creating the expansive reservoir that we know today.
